HUSH Stealth Guide: Noise, Infected and Surviving Chases
Last updated:
Getting past infected without a fight leaves you free to keep looting. Manage your noise as you move through Stillwater, and watch for doors and traversal options you can use if infected start following you.

Watch the lower-left SILENT, LOW and AUDIBLE indicator. Press C or Control to crouch, go around infected when possible, and avoid unnecessary gunfire. Jungle Combat Boots provide a -25% footstep noise modifier. When pursued, close doors and keep moving; use F at a low fence when VAULT OVER appears and let the action finish. If you fire, be ready to run. Melee avoids gunshots but still exposes you to injury.
Read SILENT, LOW and AUDIBLE
Sound attracts infected in HUSH, and gunshots can draw attention to your position. Check the noise indicator in the lower-left corner while moving and interacting. Its labels include SILENT, LOW and AUDIBLE.
Use those labels as feedback on the sound you produce. If the indicator rises while you approach infected, reconsider your movement or route before committing to a fight. Keep watching the infected themselves, too: the noise display is not an all-clear signal for an existing chase.
Reduce Noise Before Contact
- Crouch with C or Control. Use crouched movement when sneaking past infected, and go around them when a route is available.
- Avoid unnecessary shots. For a quiet loot run, bypassing an infected is preferable to firing just to clear the path: the shot can attract more attention.
- Equip Jungle Combat Boots if you have them. They go in the Boots slot and provide Footstep noise -25%. That makes them a useful choice when quieter movement is your priority. See the armor and footwear guide for their other properties and equipment choices.
- Choose melee with the close-range risk in mind. A Crowbar lets you fight without gunshots; press 3 to select it when it is equipped in the Melee slot. You can still get hit and bleed, so do not turn an avoidable encounter into a melee fight just to stay quiet.
For a complete combination of weapons, storage and supplies, use the quiet loot-run loadout guide.
Respond When Infected Follow You
Keep moving and choose an available way through the environment. Doors, fences and windows give you options, but do not assume that crossing an obstacle immediately ends pursuit.
- Close doors behind you where possible. If Doorway blocked appears with Somebody is standing in the doorway, move clear or have your teammate clear the opening, then try again.
- Use low fences when the prompt appears. Approach until you see F / VAULT OVER / Low fence, press F, and let the VAULTING action finish before continuing.
- Check the selected action at a broken window. Clear glass and Climb through are separate options. Press F to execute the selected action; check that selection before relying on the window as your next move.
- If you fire, prepare to run. Gunfire adds noise to the encounter. Continue moving instead of assuming that shooting the infected in front of you has made the area safe.
The PC controls guide covers contextual prompts and interaction troubleshooting. If you come away bleeding, use a Bandage to stop it, then restore health as needed; follow the healing guide for treatment and supply locations.
Known Infected Types
The roster below includes Runner, Brute, Screamer, Listener, Ringer, Riot Cop and Crawler. Use the listed traits to distinguish them: Listeners are blind, Ringers are associated with pagers, and Riot Cops carry shields.
Crawlers are also tied to Ward C's Kill crawlers objective. For the objective and how to track it, see the HUSH task guide.
Noise Around Helicopters and Harder Raids
Your own movement is not the only source of noise. During HELICOPTER OVER STILLWATER, rotor noise draws infected along the helicopter's flight path. When the AIR TRAFFIC notification appears, watch where nearby infected move and reassess your route before continuing. A helicopter passing overhead does not guarantee a clear path. See the raid events guide for notification details and airdrop opportunities.
Difficulty also changes the pressure on your escape decisions:
- Hard: More numerous and faster infected make avoiding contact especially valuable.
- Nightmare: Night-only raids and fast bites make close encounters a riskier choice.
Start with Normal while learning routes and interaction prompts. The raid settings guide covers deployment options and Nightmare's unlock requirement.
HUSH also has five bosses in addition to its named infected types.
